Irving W. Andre
His Excellency Franklin Andrew Baron
Franklin Baron has captivated Dominicans since the 1940s. He rose from being a wealthy and ambitious 22 year old member of the Roseau Town Council in 1945 to winning a seat on the Legislative Council in 1954. Following a relentless pursuit of power, he became Dominica's first Chief Minister in 1960. Successive electoral losses in 1961 and 1966 to E.O. Lablanc were followed by tremendous successes in business in the 1970s. Baron's support of Dame Eugenia Charles' Dominica Freedom Part propelled him in the 1980s and 1990s to become one of the most powerful men in the Charles' administration. Following the defeat of Charles' party in 1995, Baron focused his attention on the print media and through his ownership of the main national newspaper, continues to wield considerable influence on the island. Love him or hate him, Franklin Baron has remained at the forefront of Dominica's political, social and economic life for over half a century. Here, for the first time, is the amazing odyssey of Dominica's first Chief Minister.
