This week, Sophia Robinson is Knowledge Bookstore’s Author of the Week!
Sophia Robinson is an Ontario-born picture book author. As an elementary school teacher and the mother of a young son, Robinson is passionate about writing stories that reflect the authentic lived experiences of all children. Her debut picture book, Beautiful Black Boy, achieves just that.
In Beautiful Black Boy, Robinson’s poetic language and illustrator Ken Daley’s vibrant imagery work together to celebrate Black boys’ joy, confidence, and bravery.
Here’s what Robinson had to say in an interview with CTV News about writing Beautiful Black Boy:
“I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book. But then, in 2020, I was a new mom, and I had my new little baby son. 2020, as you know, was a rough, rough year. So, it was heavy. I was sad at night for this beautiful little boy, and I literally just started whispering these words to him quietly as he was falling asleep,” Robinson said.
“When it was written, I looked at it and sort of went, ‘These words are special. Other kids need to hear this. I think this is a book.’”
